Unfortunately, as with many things in life, any anaesthetic carries a small risk. However, we aim to reduce this risk as much as possible by tailoring each anaesthetic to the individual animal.
We at PetMedics have invested in equipment and in the continuing education of our vets and nurses to enable us to be up to date in knowledge and facilities; we can create an individual protocol for each patient.
Most anaesthetics involve:
• A “pre-med”; this is a sedative and painkiller and is given soon after admission. This helps your pet relax and get used to the sound and smell of the surgery. The painkiller aims to keep any discomfort following the operation to a minimum.
• An intravenous anaesthetic followed by:
• maintenance of anaesthesia by anaesthetic gases mixed with oxygen. |

Prior to pre-med, your pet will receive a clinical examination to assess them for their operation.
Additional useful information, which will incur extra costs, can be gained by pre-anaesthetic blood profiles. These check that your pet’s internal organs are working properly
These checks are:
Mini
biochemistry profile |
General
biochemistry profile |
This checks kidney function and assesses the liver. This is recommended for younger animals undergoing routine surgery e.g. neutering.
The cost is £20.00 |
This gives an excellent overview of how your pet’s internal organs are working. It is recommended if your pet is over 7 years of age.
The cost is 35.00 |
If your pet is unwell, the vet may well advise further blood tests; we will discuss this with you if we feel it is appropriate for your pet.
Please ask the veterinary staff for any further guidance on blood tests. |
